Enlarged Prostate

Are you or a loved one suffering from the symptoms of enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?

Understanding the Symptoms and Diagnosis of Your Condition

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate the symptoms of BPH. It works by reducing the blood flow to the enlarged prostate, thus shrinking it and relieving urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, weak urine flow, and incomplete emptying of the bladder.

On the day of your treatment, we will guide you through the following steps:

1

What to expect on Procedure Day:

On the day of your PAE procedure, you'll arrive at the cath lab where the intervention will take place. Before the procedure begins, you'll be given moderate sedation and local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the process.

2

During the procedure:

Your interventional radiologist, Dr Mandal, will insert a tiny catheter into a blood vessel in your groin. Using real-time imaging, the catheter is guided to the arteries that supply blood to the prostate. Small particles are then injected through the catheter to block these arteries, reducing blood flow to the prostate gland. The entire PAE procedure typically takes around 1-2 hours, and most patients can return home the same day.

3

Aftercare instructions for your recovery:

After your PAE procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or urinary symptoms such as increased frequency or urgency. These are normal and typically resolve within a few days to weeks as the prostate begins to shrink.

Optimal Recovery and Aftercare Guidelines

Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days following the procedure. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Take any prescribed medications as directed by your healthcare provider. Follow up with your doctor for post-procedure evaluations to monitor your progress. Most patients experience significant improvement in their BPH symptoms within a few weeks to months after PAE, with results lasting for several years.

Why Choose PAE for BPH Treatment?

PAE offers several advantages over traditional surgical treatments for BPH, including:

  • Minimally invasive: No incisions or general anesthesia required, leading to faster recovery and fewer complications.
  • Preserves sexual function: Unlike some surgical procedures, PAE typically does not cause erectile dysfunction or retrograde ejaculation.
  • Outpatient procedure: Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days.
